How long is the Inca Trail?
The Inca Trail is a 26-mile (43-kilometer) long trail that leads to Machu Picchu. It typically takes 4 days and 3 nights to hike the trail, although some tour operators offer longer or shorter itineraries.
The first day of the trail is relatively short and easy, taking around 5 hours to complete. The second day is when the trail starts to get steeper and more challenging, and it takes around 8-9 hours to reach the second campsite. The third day is considered the most difficult with the highest pass being at 4200m (Dead Woman’s Pass), it takes around 8-9 hours as well. On the fourth day, the trail is shorter, usually takes around 3-4 hours to reach the Sun gate and finally Machu Picchu.
It’s important to note that the trail is not always flat and easy, you will have to walk on steep stairs and rocky terrain and also the altitude can be challenging for some people, and it reaches a maximum altitude of around 13,800 feet (4,200 meters) at the highest point, known as Dead Woman’s Pass. Therefore, It’s important to be physically and mentally prepared for the trail, to take the time to acclimatize to the altitude, and to train for the trail before your hike.
Also, bear in mind that the trail can be affected by the weather, it can rain and make the trail slippery, this is why it’s important to have the right gear and clothing to make your journey as comfortable as possible.
